The Sign-Up Dates Behind Sacramento's Halloween Season

Sacramento's Halloween season is spread across city community centers from South Land Park Drive to Meadowview, Logan Street and Marysville Boulevard, plus a children's park on Land Park Drive, a handful of Old Sacramento bars and two Día de los Muertos gatherings. Most of it is free. Most of it also lands in about two and a half weeks, and the parts that need a ticket or a sign-up have deadlines that come before the first busy Friday.

The first deadline is this Thursday, Oct. 15. That's the last day for advance pricing on Fairytale Town's Safe & Super Halloween, which opens the next evening.

The calendar from here to Nov. 2

Two city events have already happened: Halloween Bingo at Coloma Community Center on Oct. 9 and the Fall Fest Family Fun Day at South Natomas Community Center on Oct. 10. Here's what's still ahead:

  • Thu., Oct. 15: Third Thursdays in Old Sacramento, 4 to 8 p.m., free. Last day for Fairytale Town advance tickets.
  • Fri., Oct. 16: Howl-O-Ween at Belle Cooledge Community Center and MeadowBOO! at Pannell Community Center, both 6 to 8 p.m. Fairytale Town opens, 5 to 9 p.m.
  • Sat. and Sun., Oct. 17–18: Fairytale Town, 5 to 9 p.m.
  • Fri., Oct. 23: Fright Night at Sim, George Sim Community Center, 6 to 8 p.m., advance registration required. Fairytale Town, 5 to 9 p.m.
  • Sat., Oct. 24: Fairytale Town's last night, 5 to 9 p.m.
  • Tue., Oct. 27: Del Paso Frights at Hagginwood Community Center, 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Fri. and Sat., Oct. 30–31: El Panteón de Sacramento at 2700 Front St.
  • Mon., Nov. 2: La Raza Galeria Posada's Día de los Muertos ceremony at St. Mary's Cemetery, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Every Thursday and Friday in October, Old Sacramento's Frights and Flights runs in the background with Halloween drinks at participating bars.

Where the free nights happen

The free part of the season comes from the City's Department of Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment. YPCE spread its October programming across community centers in different parts of the city instead of putting on one central festival. The Sacramento City Express listing from Oct. 2 calls them a series of free, family-friendly events and lists six, each at a different center.

The four still to come follow a similar format. Three are on Friday nights from 6 to 8 p.m.:

  • Howl-O-Ween, Belle Cooledge Community Center, 5699 S. Land Park Drive. A haunted house, games and costume contests for dogs, youth and adults.
  • MeadowBOO!, Pannell Community Center, 2450 Meadowview Road. Billed as a free Halloween celebration for all ages.
  • Fright Night at Sim, George Sim Community Center, 6207 Logan St. The center's annual haunted house, open to all ages.
  • Del Paso Frights, Hagginwood Community Center, 3271 Marysville Blvd. Indoor trick-or-treating, games and music, on a Tuesday.

All four are free, but the sign-up rules differ. Fright Night requires advance registration. The City lists registration as required for Howl-O-Ween, and its costume contests take day-of registration with limited space. The listing shows no registration line for MeadowBOO! or Del Paso Frights. The City's YPCE page is where sign-ups and other programs are posted.

Friday, Oct. 16 is the most crowded night

Three of the season's events open on the same evening. Howl-O-Ween and MeadowBOO! both run 6 to 8 p.m., and Fairytale Town starts its run at 5 p.m. a short drive up Land Park Drive. Both the community center and Fairytale Town have Land Park Drive addresses, so a family could fit both into one evening on one road.

This is also the night when the deadlines matter most. Here's how the costs and sign-ups compare:

Event Cost What you need ahead of time
Howl-O-Ween, Oct. 16 Free Registration; costume contest sign-up is day-of, space limited
MeadowBOO!, Oct. 16 Free None listed
Fairytale Town, Oct. 16–18, 23–24 $15 advance, $12 members, $18 day-of Special event ticket
Fright Night at Sim, Oct. 23 Free Advance registration
Del Paso Frights, Oct. 27 Free None listed
El Panteón, Oct. 30–31 $10 one day, $15 both Ticket

This year is the 40th annual Safe & Super Halloween at Fairytale Town, 3901 Land Park Drive. It runs five evenings over two weekends. Advance tickets are $15, or $12 for eligible members, through Oct. 15. Day-of tickets are $18, and children under 2 get in free. For a family of four buying on the night, that's $12 more than buying by Thursday.

Old Sacramento has the Thursdays

The community centers mostly have Friday nights. Old Sacramento's October happens on Thursdays and Fridays, and it's aimed more at adults.

Third Thursdays on Oct. 15 runs roughly 4 to 8 p.m. at participating Old Sacramento businesses. It's free and open to the public. This month's activities include a jewelry scavenger hunt and workshops for designing Halloween tees and trick-or-treat bags. The organizer doesn't list costs for individual activities.

Frights and Flights runs every Thursday and Friday in October. Last Stop Saloon at 916 2nd St. has a Hocus Pocus "Fright Flight" that pairs a shot with a half pint, themed to each Sanderson sister. Honey & The Trapcat at 1023 Front St. rotates new Halloween cocktails every week. O'Mally's Irish Pub at 1109 2nd St. pours a fall-themed margarita flight.

Two newer Old Sacramento spots are on the same walk this year. The Sacramento Bee reported that Der Biergarten Waterfront set its grand opening for Friday, Aug. 7 at 1108 Front St., bringing the Midtown beer garden to the riverfront. The Bee's August openings roundup also includes The 1920s Bookstore, a speakeasy-style bar at 900 2nd St. Neither is on the Frights and Flights map. They're simply a block or two from the bars that are.

Week two moves to Logan Street and a Tuesday

The second week is lighter. Fright Night at Sim on Friday, Oct. 23 is the one free event this month that the City lists as needing advance registration. That makes it the event most likely to require planning more than a day ahead. Fairytale Town runs its last two nights, Oct. 23 and 24, at the same 5 to 9 p.m. hours.

Sacramento Zoo's 2026 events page lists a Fall Zoobilee for Oct. 24 and 25, with no hours or price posted yet. The page says more updates are coming. The zoo's separate Halloween-themed page still shows last year's date, so check it before planning around it.

Del Paso Frights at Hagginwood Community Center is on Tuesday, Oct. 27. It's the only weeknight event on the city's list that isn't on a Friday. The City says it offers safe indoor trick-or-treating along with games and music. That's useful for families with kids too young for a late Halloween night out, and it doesn't conflict with anything else on the calendar.

The season ends on Front Street and at St. Mary's

Halloween weekend belongs to Día de los Muertos. El Panteón de Sacramento is presented by the Latino Center of Art and Culture at 2700 Front St. It runs Friday, Oct. 30 from 5 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 31 from 3 to 10 p.m. The Sacramento365 listing describes two days of live dance and music, with ofrendas created by families. Admission is $10 for one day or $15 for both. Because it's open on Halloween afternoon and evening, a household can attend before or after trick-or-treating without picking one over the other.

The season ends on Monday, Nov. 2 at St. Mary's Cemetery, 65th Street and 21st Avenue. That's where La Raza Galeria Posada holds its 51st annual Día de los Muertos ceremony from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It begins with a procession from the cemetery entrance and includes a Catholic Mass, an Indigenous ceremony and Azteca dancers. The public is invited to bring photos of loved ones for the community ofrenda. The listing doesn't mention admission or registration.
